The reader poll was a BUST!

I wanted to use the poll to try and better understand who is visiting (and how often), but apparently people aren't into polls (or aren't visiting).

Which is it?

I did some more statistical snooping, and started using a second tool, StatCounter, to get more insight on our readership. I began this mid-way through the month, so I don't have much to go on, but what I have found out is already pretty revealing.

Our numbers (according to Blogger) were 852 pageviews for August (almost 200 pageviews for any given 7-day stretch through the month).

For the latter half of the month (August 16 to 31), I have two sets of stats:

• From Blogger: 425
• From StatCounter: 290

The large discrepancy is explained by how StatCounter works: it only counts computers that have viewed a page (and uploaded a cookie). If the cookie wasn't uploaded, or the site is a crawler, then it does not register.

The pageviews  recorded by StatCounter reveal that 72% are mapped to a single "server: in France. This could be a crawler, or many users. If we exclude visits that don't last a second in length, we have an additional 13 visitors during that 2-week period.

Not too shabby...

I also spent time this month looking at the daily stats from Pod-O-Matic, and I can also conclude we are getting traffic consistent with ITYWLTMT's traffic. Throughout the month, 35 podcasts were played back from the embedded player on ITYWLTMT, and about as many either downloaded the montage or played it from the Podcsat page.

This is a nice "stake in the ground" that I can use to compare things in a few months.

Je ne peux conclure qu'on n'aime PAS les sondages...



Mon intention était de me servir des résultats du sondage pour comprendre qui visite. Il m'a donc fallu avoir recours à un autre stratagème.

Avec l'aide du service en ligne StatCounter, j'ai un outil qui permet de dénombrer les visiteurs. Avec l'outil de Blogger, je peux affirmer que ITYWLTMT a été visité 852 fois en août (presque 200 fois pour une période contigüe de 7 jours).

Avec StatCounter, j'ai des résultats pour la période allant du 16 au 31 août:

• Blogger: 425
• StatCounter: 290

La différence s'explique par la méthode utilisée par StatCouter qui installe des "cookies" sur les machines qui visitent notre site. Si les machines refusent de charger le petit programme, comme c'est le cas pour des outils comme les crawlers, on n'aura pas de visite enregistrées.

Les résultats induquent qu'un serveur Dedibox en France est responsable pour 72% des visites! Si on fait exception des visites qui ne durent pas même une seconde, on trouve 13 visiteurs pendant ces deux semaines.



Pas trop mal, quand même...

J'ai ensuite regardé les résultats quotidiens de notre baladodiffuseur Pod-O-Matic, la fréquentation ici est équivalente à celle d'ITYWLTMT. Pour le mois d'août, 35 auditions de la balodidiffusion se sont faites à partir du lecteur intégré sur ITYWLTMT, et un nombre à peu près semblable ont téléchargé les montages.

Voici donc un point de repère qui me sera utile pour comparer les statistiques à l'avenir.
