English Commentary – le commentaire français suit

A couple of days ago the yearly course of the Sun reached the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, signalling the astronomical (and calendar) arrival of Spring. Of all the seasons, I think Spring is the one that offers the most musical renditions - likely because of the renewal associated with its arrival. I chose some of these to fill this montage.

The first selection chosen, On hearing the First Cuckoo In Spring by Delius, is a nice segue from last week';s montage on Birds and this week's homage to the new season. Goldmark's Springtime Overture is a favourite of mine, and the recording I chose (the old Fleetwood recording by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops) was my personal introduction to it.

A few major works dedicated to Spring featured here include Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, Copland's Appalachian Spring and Schumann's Spring Symphony (Complete performance here). The less-heard Rondes de Printemps by Debussy is one of the three Images for Orchestra that include Iberia (which is often performed on its own).

FAST-FORWARD: A complete performance of Th eRite of Spring is featured in our May 2013 montage This Day in Music History - 29 May 1913. 

Other short pieces by Mendelssohn, Johann Strauss II, Richard Strauss, Mahler and canadian jazz pianist Lorraine Desmarais complete the montage.

Il y a quelques jours, le parcours du Soleil dans notre firmament l'a amené à l'équinoxe du printemps dans l'hémisphère Nord, donc le point et astronomique et convenu pour le début du printemps. En musique classique, le printemps et le renouveau qui s'y rattache a inspiré plus d'un compositeur, et voici donc une belle occasioin pour nous d'en écouter quelques exemples.

Commençons avec On hearing the First Cuckoo In Spring de Delius, servant de trait d'union entre le montage sur les oiseaux de la semaine dernière et le montage d'aujourd'hui. L'ouverture de Karl Goldmark évoauant le printemps est une de mes pièces préférées, et la version choisie  (Arthur Fiedler et les Boston Pops) s'adonne être mon introduction personnelle à cette oeuvre.

Parmi des oeuvres plus ambitieuses, je vous propose des extraits de la première symphonie de Schumann (performance intégrale ici), Le Sacre du Printemps de Stravinski et Appalachain Spring de Copland.

EN AVANT LA MUSIQUE: Une prestation intégrale du Sacre du Printemps fait partie de notre montage du mois de mai 2013 Ephéméride musical pour le 29 mai 1913. 

L'une des trois images pour orchestre de Debussy, moins célènbre que Iberia, est Rondes de Printemps et fait le palmarès cette semaine. S'ajoutent des miniatures de Mendelssohn, Johann Strauss II, Richard Strauss, Mahler et de la pianiste de jazz québécoise Lorraine Desmarais.
