English Commentary – le commentaire français suit

The numbers 7 and 11 have a special meaning in dice. According to Yahoo Answers, craps is one of the most exciting casino games.

The first roll of the dice in a betting round of craps is called the Come Out roll - The dice are rolled across the craps table layout. The layout is divided into three areas - two side areas separated by a center one. Each side area is the mirror reflection of the other and contains the following: Pass and Don't Pass line bets, Come and Don't Come bets, Odds bet, Place bets and Field bets. The center area is shared by both side areas and contains the Proposition bets.

Pass bets win when the come out roll is 7 or 11, while pass bets lose when the come out roll is 2, 3, or 12.Don't bets lose when the come out roll is 7 or 11, and don't bets win when the come out roll is 2 or 3. Don't bets tie when the come out roll is 12 (2 in some casinos; the 'Bar' roll on the layout indicates which roll is treated as a tie).

How confusing!

Maybe we should be better served by the more common North-American reference to 7 and 11 – that is the convenbience stores that initially were open from 7 am to 11 pm, hours unprecedented in their length, hence the name. The company began to use the 7-Eleven name in 1946. By 1952, 7-Eleven opened its 100th store. Today, the stores are open 24 hours, but the name remains…

In the context of our music by the numbers series, we will sample some 7’s and 11’s from Classical Music, and two works in particular.

The Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97, by Ludwig van Beethoven is commonly referred to as the Archduke Trio, because it was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Austria, an amateur pianist who was a friend and studied composition with him. Although the "Archduke Trio" is sometimes numbered as "No. 7", the numbering of Beethoven's twelve piano trios is not standardized, and in other sources the Op. 97 trio may be shown as having a different number, if any.

The first public performance was given with Beethoven himself at the piano at the Viennese hotel Zum römischen Kaiser on 11 April 1814. His deafness affecting more and more his ability as a performer, this performance stands out as Beethoven's last public performance in the role of pianist.

The Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, or Twelve Grand Concertos, are a set of 12 concerti by Georg Frideric Handelfor a concertino trio of two violins and cello and a ripieno four-part string orchestra with harpsichord continuo. I retained the penultimate concerto of the set (no. 11, HWV 329), Accoording to music historianCharles Burney (1726-1814) “... the Symphony, or introduction, of the andante is extremely pleasing; and no less remarkable for its grace, than the boldness with which the composer, in order to bring in the answers to points of imitation, has used double discords, unprepared. The Solo parts of this movement were thought more brilliant, than easy and natural to the bow and finger-board, forty-years ago.”
To complete the programme, a number of “single selections” that meet our numerical criteria fromPaganiniDvořák, Albeniz and Rachmaninoff. As filler, here is the complete set of Etudes-Tableaux:

I think you will love this music too.
